Program Open Space
Program Open Space is a nationally recognized program providing dedicated funds for Maryland's state and local parks and conservation areas. POS funding is used to purchase ballfields, neighborhood playgrounds, tennis courts, boating facilities, swimming pools, fishing sites, hunting areas, forests, golf courses, hiking trails, greenways, wildlife areas, historic sites, formal gardens and a host of other natural community resources. For more information please contact the local Program Open Space Administrator.
Ag-Land Preservation
The Maryland Agricultural Land Preservation Program's primary purpose is to preserve sufficient agricultural land to maintain a viable local base of food and fiber production for the present and future citizens of Maryland. The Program consists of two basic steps: the establishment of agricultural preservation districts, and the purchase of perpetual agricultural conservation easements. For more information please click on the following links:
Agricultural Preservation Districts - this document describes the eligibility criteria and procedures for the establishment of agricultural preservation districts and how an agricultural preservation district benefits a farmer.
The Easement Acquisition Program - this document describes the eligibility criteria for easement application, the conditions of an easement, the stages of the easement acquisition program, and how to determine the "asking price" for an easment application.
Settlement of an Agricultural Conservation Easement - this document describes the process of settlement of an agricultural conservation easement and measures to take expedite that process.
Development Options Retained in Districts and Easement Properties - this document details the eligibility landowners retain to request that lots for themselves and their children be released from the district or easement. It also details the eligibility and procedure for tenant house approval.
Small Properties in the Agricultural Preservation Program - this document describes how the program works and its limitations for owners of small properties interested in participating in the program.
Subsequent Owners of Districts or Easement Properties - this document describes the benefits and restrictions of the Program to the current owner of property on which the previous owner had established an agricultural preservation district or sold a perpetual agricultural conservation easement.
Rural Legacy
The Rural Legacy Program provides the focus and funding necessary to protect large, contiguous tracts of land and other strategic areas from sprawl development and to enhance natural resource, agriculture, forestry and environmental protection through cooperative efforts among state and local governments and land trusts. Protection is provided through the acquisition of easements and fee estates from willing landowners and the supporting activities of Rural Legacy Sponsors and local governments. The Program encourages local governments and private land trusts to identify Rural Legacy Areas and to competitively apply for funds to complement existing land preservation efforts or to develop new ones. Easements or fee estate purchases are sought from willing landowners in order to protect areas vulnerable to sprawl development that can weaken an area's natural resources, thereby jeopardizing the economic value of farming, forestry and tourism. For more information please contact the local Rural Legacy Administrator.
