Job Position Openings

JOB TITLE:  Correctional Officer
                        Garrett County Sheriff’s Office    
SUMMARY:  Maintain security and custody of inmates in the Garrett County Detention Center. Adhere to all policies and procedures, answer citizens calls for service. This position is for a 24 hour, seven days per week shift coverage. Shifts are rotating beginning at 7 AM and 7 PM. All hours are always subject to change.
EXAMPLES OF WORK: (Examples are illustrative only)
Assist in the control of Detention Center records, reports, procedures, personnel transactions, and supplies.  Provide for appropriate and efficient operations of the Garrett County Detention Center.

Conduct booking, classification, and release of incoming and outgoing inmates including photo and fingerprinting of inmate. Provide for a safe and secure facility through routine cell checks and head counts. Complete and document all internal inspections within the facility.  Conduct investigations and document through reports, incidents involving inmate infractions. Schedule and supervise inmate visitations. Oversee community inmate work crews. Provide inmate transportation to court hearings, medical appointments, etc. Provide prisoner transport to other holding facilities, such as Department of Corrections. Responsible for the releasing of inmates as ordered by the Courts and following related procedures.  Responsible for overseeing of inmate trustees with their assigned duties. Conduct all other duties as assigned by the Corporal and/or Administrator.
Must be eighteen (18) years of age; possess a high-school diploma or equivalent.  Applicant will be required to successfully complete the (7) weeks Maryland Correctional Academy.  Good general physical and mental condition.  Possess a valid driver’s license.
Selected applicant will undergo a complete background investigation including a polygraph, credit check, psychological evaluation, physical and drug testing prior to employment.

Starting salary is $32,900 including a traditional County employee benefit package. Training and uniforms are provided.
