The Garrett County Department of Solid Waste & Recycling has announced that the 2020 Residential Refuse Permits are now available. The 2020 permits will be valid from the date of purchase through the end of calendar year 2020.
Current permit holders can renew online at www.GarrettCounty.org with no need for a new sticker. A $75 fee applies. For those existing permit holders, the permit must be renewed by December 31, 2019 or users will be required to pay a per-bag fee.
Any resident may purchase or renew the permit by mail or in person at the Landfill located on Oakland Sang Run Road or the Garrett County Tax Collection Office at the courthouse. The $75.00 fee per vehicle can be paid using cash, check, debit or credit card, or money order. When a new permit is purchased, the sticker will be mailed the next business day.
Garrett County continues to be among the lowest priced jurisdictions in Maryland and the surrounding area for waste disposal. Recycling continues to be free for county residents and the average county permit holder can dispose of all household waste and occasional bulk items for less than $1.50 per week.
The Garrett County Department of Solid Waste and Recycling operates as an enterprise fund covering operating costs through fees rather than tax dollars.
The permitting system utilizes a radio frequency identification system (RFID) that allows the same permit to be renewed. If a customer requires a replacement permit due to trading a vehicle, loss of a windshield, or an accident, they can order a replacement with a phone call or e-mail to the Landfill office. The RFID will allow a permit to be switched off electronically so that customers no longer need to return the old permit for a replacement.
Purchasing or renewing early will help customers avoid lines and delays at the end of the year. For any questions or additional information, please contact the Solid Waste & Recycling office at 301-387-0322.
