First Energy has been working diligently to reduce power outages throughout the County.   Current outages are at 27%, which is down from 38% reported yesterday.  First Energy’s goal is to have 95% of customers restored by the end of the day Monday.
 
The public should use extreme caution in making contact with any type of utility line including electrical, phone and/or cable.  Electric lines that were de-energized could be re-energized or made “hot” by home generators.  Phone and cable wires could be crossed with live wires and carry electrical current.   
 
First Energy Downed -Power Lines Safety Tips
Touching a live power line can cause serious injury or death. You can't tell by looking whether a line is "hot" or not. Even if a downed line isn't actively sparking, always assume it is carrying electricity.
 
If you come upon a downed power line:
  1. Don't go near the wire, or anything it is touching.
  2. Warn others to stay away.
  3. Call your local police or fire department, or call one of our toll-free, 24-hour emergency service numbers.
Citizens are encouraged to contact the Community Help Line for information and assistance with non-life threatening issues.  Please do not call 9-1-1 Communications for information on road conditions or electric status.

Special Alert to Citizens:
  • If you have power lines down that are connected to your home, please turn off the main breaker;
  • Generator Safety-any individual utilizing a generator at their residence MUST be sure to provide adequate ventilation.  Do not use a generator or other gas appliances that emit fumes in the home or an attached garage.
  • Please check on neighbors, especially senior citizens and people with special needs;
  • Make sure to check-on pets and livestock.
 
County managed shelters have been closed at this time.  Garrett County will continue to monitor any needs that may arise.
 
Donations management is being coordinator through Garrett County Community Action.  They have a facility open on 360 West Liberty Street, Oakland and may be reached at (301)533-9018.  This facility is accepting donations from 9:00 AM-5:00 PM. Garrett County Community Action is handling donation distribution.
