Garrett County Government Social Media Commenting Guidelines

Garrett County Government’s (the “County”) social media accounts are designed to present matters of interest to Garrett County residents, businesses, and visitors. All comments and posts to social media accounts provided by the County, including those made by the public, are subject to the provisions of Maryland law, including Maryland’s Public Information Act. . The County’s social media accounts are not monitored 24/7. The County does not endorse, support, sanction, encourage, verify or agree with the comments, messages, posts that are presented by the public on the County’s social media.


The County reserves the right to delete from its social media accounts any content, at any time, for any reason, including but not limited to comments that contain vulgar, disruptive or offensive language or represent attacks on any individual or group of individuals on the basis of race, creed, color, age, religion, gender, marital status, status with regard to public assistance, national origin, physical or mental disability or sexual orientation.


The County reserves the right to delete or remove comments or posts that encourage violence, illegal activity, promote commercial services, promote or endorse commercial products or any elected official or candidate for elected office, violate the provisions of State or Federal laws, including those designed to protect copyright and trademarks, those that include links to other sites or are not related to the topic of category of the original post, those posts that identify the personal identifying information (PII) of any individual, including but not limited to contact information, medical information, and confidential financial information; those that contain sexual content or links to sexual content; those that include information that may compromise the safety, security, or proceedings of public systems or any criminal or civil investigations; or are outdated.

The County’s social media is not the appropriate forum for reporting or registering allegations of criminal activity or making other accusations or allegations against individuals. Allegations that anyone is guilty of criminal conduct or has engaged in immoral conduct or made defamatory statements will not be permitted. If a person believes there is legitimate basis for complaint relating to criminal activity, they should report that to the Maryland State Police or the Garrett County Sheriff’s Department. Any complaint against the County or its employees, should be reported to the County, directly.
